Gaming laptops pack powerful hardware into a thin body, and that hardware produces a lot of heat. In a warm, humid country like Malaysia, it’s common to see high temperatures, loud fans and performance that drops after a while. The good news is that most of it is manageable.
Why heat hurts performance
When components get too hot, they automatically slow themselves down to stay safe. This is called thermal throttling, and it shows up as sudden frame rate drops in the middle of a game. Keeping temperatures lower helps your laptop deliver steady performance.
Easy wins
- Lift the back. Raising the rear of the laptop by a couple of centimetres improves airflow underneath. A simple stand works well.
- Use a hard, flat surface. Beds, pillows and sofas block the air intakes.
- Use a cooling pad. It won’t work miracles, but it helps on many models.
- Keep the room cool. Gaming under a fan or in an air-conditioned room makes a noticeable difference.
Check your power and performance modes
Most gaming laptops come with software that lets you choose between quiet, balanced and performance modes. Performance mode gives the highest frame rates but also the most heat and noise. For lighter games, balanced mode is often enough.
Capping your frame rate to your screen’s refresh rate also reduces unnecessary work and heat.
Clean the dust
Dust builds up surprisingly fast, especially in homes near busy roads or construction. Every few months, use compressed air to blow dust out of the vents while the laptop is off. Hold the fans still while doing this so they don’t over-spin.
Consider a professional service
After a couple of years, the thermal paste between the processor and its cooler can dry out. A reputable service centre can clean the internals and replace the paste. If your laptop is still under warranty, check the terms first, as opening it yourself may affect coverage.
Mind the humidity
High humidity isn’t usually a problem during use, but avoid moving a laptop straight from a very cold air-conditioned room into hot, humid outdoor air and switching it on immediately. Give it a few minutes to adjust.
Monitor temperatures
Free monitoring tools can show your CPU and GPU temperatures while gaming. If you regularly see very high readings even after cleaning, contact the manufacturer’s support.
