Not long ago, the choice was simple: a gaming PC for flexibility or a console for convenience. Handheld gaming PCs have shaken things up, letting you carry a library of PC games in your bag. So which one makes sense for you?

What is a handheld PC?

A handheld PC is essentially a small computer with a built-in screen and controller. It can run PC game launchers, so you can play many of the same games you would on a desktop, just at lower settings.

Game library

  • Consoles have exclusive titles you can’t play elsewhere, plus a curated store that is easy to browse.
  • Handheld PCs give access to large PC libraries and frequent digital sales, and you can play games you may already own.

If there’s a particular exclusive franchise you love, that alone may decide it.

Portability

A handheld goes anywhere: balik kampung trips, long bus rides or lepak sessions at a friend’s place. Home consoles are designed to stay under the TV, although some can stream to a phone or handheld device over a good connection.

Performance and battery

Consoles are built for a TV and deliver consistent performance with very little tinkering. Handhelds trade power for portability. Demanding games may need lower settings, and battery life during heavy games can be only a couple of hours.

Ease of use

Consoles are plug and play, which is great for families. Handheld PCs are much easier than they used to be, but you may occasionally need to adjust settings, update drivers or troubleshoot a game. If you enjoy tinkering, that’s part of the fun.

Cost

Both options carry similar upfront prices at the mid-range, but think about the long-term costs. Console online multiplayer usually requires a paid subscription, while PC online play is generally free. PC games are also often discounted, though console sales are common too.

Our take

  • Choose a console if you want simplicity, play mostly at home on a TV and love its exclusive games.
  • Choose a handheld PC if you travel often, already have a PC game library or enjoy fine-tuning settings.

Whatever you pick, check local warranty and after-sales support before buying. For more advice, read our PC & Console guides, including our budget gaming PC guide.
